The warehouse position selection is the key to Statesman’s character: upper-floor barrels in Kentucky warehouses experience the most severe temperature cycling through the state’s hot summers and cold winters — the heat drives bourbon into the wood, the cold pulls it back out, and each cycle extracts more oak tannin, caramel, and spice than center or lower-floor positions. Hand-selecting from these warmest positions produces a bourbon with more assertive oak and spice than Old Forester’s standard expressions while the 95-proof bottling preserves that character without excessive dilution.
