Description
BenRiach The Smoky Ten is the core peated expression from BenRiach Distillery in Longmorn, Speyside — one of the few Speyside distilleries to produce both peated and unpeated expressions, presenting 10 years of heavily peated single malt maturation from the distillery’s historic peated production line.
BenRiach revived its peated production in 2013 after years of unpeated-only distillation — the Smoky Ten draws on this peated production at 10 years of maturation in ex-bourbon and virgin oak casks, presenting a distinctly Speyside take on peated single malt that differs from Islay’s coastal peat character.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is BenRiach Smoky Ten heavily peated compared to Islay expressions?
Moderately peated rather than heavily peated by Islay standards. The Speyside peat character is typically more earthy and less medicinal or coastal than southern Islay expressions. BenRiach’s peated production uses a similar PPM to standard Islay expressions but the Speyside terroir and production produce a different smoke character.
How does the Smoky Ten compare to BenRiach’s unpeated expressions?
The Smoky Ten is the peated counterpart to the standard BenRiach 10 Year Old. Same distillery character, same age and cask types, but with the peated barley adding a smoky layer to the multi-cask fruity base. A direct comparison study of what peat does to the same distillery’s spirit.
